Domo Baal is delighted to invite Miho Sato to present her fourth solo exhibition in the gallery: Freedom. Miho Sato last exhibited here ten years ago and this exhibition marks twenty years and the 140th exhibition in this space since the opening of the gallery in 2000.

Respecting the Covid–19 situation: the artist will be present from noon until six for the first two days of the exhibition: Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September. During the course of the exhibition: we are allowing a maximum of four visitors in the building at any one time and all must wear a mask or face covering; we are providing alcohol cleansing gel, and have installed an air purifier. All visitors will be checked in upon arrival using the nhs covid–19 test and trace app.

What do you intend your work to convey to an audience?
Total freedom.

Why do you work in your chosen medium and format?
I work fast, because I cannot wait so acrylic and board suits me.

Technically speaking how do you go about constructing your work, that is the image or object itself? What devices do you employ?
I choose the image first – then I start drawing (like an editing, sometimes like a meditating way) – then I start painting on the dark board. To use the dark board at the beginning was technical reason but now it is getting something else.

Which period(s)/artists/specific works of art are you influenced by and how directly? How does this manifest in your work?
There are many periods and many artists I am influenced by and I am changing my mind all the time.

What stimulates/informs your work from the world around you?
Anything, like in everyday life you encounter little events.

What stimulates/informs your work from your own personal experience?
I prefer not to tell.

From where do you derive your other visual source material (i.e. non art historical) and how do you implement this material within your work?
I collect the images everywhere.

What are the main problems that you face in making your work?
There are little problems all the time, that turn into nice things. so maybe I do not have a main problem?

Where do you intend to take your work from here?
Freedom.

Two paintings by Miho Sato have been selected by Sonia Boyce for the Royal Academy Summer Winter Exhibition 2020, and may be seen in Gallery IV.
